POPE BENEDICT XVI GAVE OUR CHURCH THE TITLE OF MINOR BASILICA IN 2009
On July 25, 2009, on the Feast of St. James the Elder, a decree prepared by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was signed in the Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI. The document gave the decanal church in Nysa the title of the papal basilica (Latin "Bazilica minor", that is, a minor basilica).
On August 23, 2009, this decision was announced by the bishop of the Opole diocese, Archbishop Alfons Nossol.
This title is of historical and honorary importance. In the Opolskie Voivodeship it was also given to the sanctuary on St. Anna. The sign of the basilica in Nysa is a bronze papal coat of arms placed above the main entrance.
